Also referred to as Kwilla, Merbau timber decking is the most popular choice for Sydney decks. Merbau is grown in New Guinea, Indonesia and North Queensland.
At Deck-Max, we only supply you merbau timber from Government regulated supply chains and carry certified proof of origin for all of our timbers. With well established relationships with the best suppliers, Deck-Max has steady, constant access to the highest quality Merbau timber decking.
Naturally, the colour is reddish brown, with the highest grades characterised by golden spots. Ultimately though, the final colour is influenced by your choice of coating.
Preparation of Merbau
To ensure you get the best results from using merbau on your deck, special attention is required in the preparation of your timber. By doing this, Deck-Max is able to provide you with the best results in terms of board straightness, resin stability and longevity.
To produce the best stability and sustained straightness of your merbau, the core moisture needs to be 15-18%.
By kiln drying over many weeks, alternated with air drying, this can be achieved in a reliable manner.
For maximum straightness, Deck-Max will have your timber cut as straight boards before the final sizing cuts are made.
Board lengths are also capped at 3.6m to ensure that tolerances are kept within 0.2mm, providing highly accurate sizing and improves transport options for your boards.
Proof of origin
By only supplying merbau from regulated sources, your timber is only harvested in compliance with the strictest guidelines and highest quality controls.
This ensures that you can enjoy the peace of mind, knowing that you’ll only be supplied with the best quality hardwood for your deck. This protects you, the environment and the timber industry.

Care of your Merbau timber decking
Moisture is the primary cause of hardwood damage. Your Merbau timber decking is delivered with plastic covering to minimise surface marks from moisture. Store stacked and covered until laying, then clean all marks after laying (resin bleed, dirt, etc), then coat immediately with recommended penetrating oil
After laying and before coating, it is recommended that you either:
- Clean down with Deck-Max Pro Clean to remove marks and dirt.
- Or, run a polyvac (lightly sands the surface) before vacuuming and oiling as soon as possible
